Liver function tests are blood tests that can help determine the overall health of the liver. These tests look at enzymes, proteins, and waste products made by the liver. A person’s blood is tested for proteins made by the liver such as albumin and prothrombin, enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and bilirubin (a waste product).[1] Imaging tests such as ultrasounds, computed tomography CT, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are also done to detect and measure liver scarring.
