    Last Updated: October 25, 2023

Yes, MetS increases the risk of a number of conditions, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as all-cause mortality. Having MetS has been associated with the following increased health risks:

    • A 253%–417% higher risk of type 2 diabetes[1]
    • A 65%–118% higher risk of incident cardiovascular disease or events[2][3][4]
    • A 74%–117% higher risk of cardiovascular-disease-related mortality[3][4]
    • A 41%–60% higher risk of all-cause mortality[3][4]
    • 150% higher odds of polycystic ovary syndrome[5][6]
    • A higher risk of several cancers, including a 36% higher risk of colorectal cancer,[7], a 47% higher risk of breast cancer,[8] a 76% higher risk of liver cancer,[9] and an 89% higher risk of endometrial cancer[10]
