Respiratory Distress Syndrome

    Last Updated: October 13, 2024

Respiratory distress syndrome is a common breathing disorder that affects newborns. It is caused by a lack of surfactant — a foamy substance that keeps the lungs expanded and prevents them from collapsing — and occurs most often in babies born earlier than 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Respiratory Distress Syndrome falls under the Lungs & Breathing category.
