    Certain supplements that stimulate the immune system — such as alfalfa, echinacea, and spirulina — may worsen symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus in some individuals. There is also a case report of a person whoi developed lupus-like symptoms after taking an alfalfa supplement.

    It is possible that supplements aimed at stimulating the immune system could worsen SLE symptoms in some people. For this reason, people with SLE are often advised to avoid supplements like alfalfa, echinacea, and spirulina.[1] There is a case report of a study volunteer developing lupus-like symptoms after ingesting an alfalfa supplement for a hypercholesterolemia study.[2]
