Iron should be taken orally for 3 to 6 months after hemoglobin levels normalize to replenish iron stores, but long-term supplementation without monitoring is not advised due to potential severe side effects from high iron levels.

It is recommended to continue to take iron orally for 3–6 months after normalization of Hb in order to replenish iron stores (ferritin).[1] Long-term supplementation of iron without monitoring iron blood markers is not recommended, however, as the side effects of high iron levels can be severe.[2]
