Osteopenia typically does not cause any symptoms, and it often goes unrecognized. The first noticeable sign may be a fragility fracture, which occurs from an impact that would not normally cause a fracture in a person without osteopenia.

Osteopenia, or low bone density, usually does not cause any symptoms. Sometimes the first sign of osteopenia will be a fragility fracture, which is when a bone breaks from an impact that would normally not cause a fracture in a healthy individual (e.g., falling from standing height).
