Multiple sclerosis is influenced by the immune system, but the initial triggers remain unclear. Factors such as genetics, viral infections, environmental influences, and psychological stress may contribute to the development of the disease.

The immune system is heavily involved in the development of MS, but it’s not clear what provokes this response in the first place. Genetics, viral infections, and other environmental factors have all been connected to MS in observational research.[1] Psychological stress (e.g., parental divorce and extreme grief) may also predispose people to the disease.[2]
