    After the symptoms of the initial infection have subsided, herpes simplex virus (HSV) goes dormant in nerve cells — specifically, in sensory nerves close to the spine. When the infection reactivates, the virus travels along the sensory nerves to the skin at the site of the initial infection.[1]
