Summary
From a scientific standpoint, diseases and conditions are effects that arise from a set of causes. Etiology describes the origin, cause, or set of causes of diseases and conditions. For example, the etiology of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) can be tobacco smoking, whereas the etiology of cardiovascular disease can be a blood clot formed from the buildup of arterial plaque.
