Summary
How is VO2max measured?
VO2max is usually measured during an incremental exercise test using a treadmill or cycle ergometer. Oxygen use is measured using a specialized instrument attached to a mouthpiece or mask that the participant wears. The participant then increases the exercise intensity over time. VO2max is the rate of oxygen consumption at the point at which the oxygen uptake rate no longer increases (or only increases marginally) even with an increase in workload.
Why does VO2max matter?
An improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness increases the chances of survival and decreases the likelihood of long-term problems. VO2max is also related to cardiorespiratory endurance, which indicates how active someone can be without getting exhausted.
What are the benefits of a higher VO2max?
The amount of oxygen used by cells in the body is critical for health and performance. The body needs oxygen for typical daily functions including moving muscles and organ function. People with higher a VO2max generally have a decreased risk of dying early and developing a range of chronic illnesses.
How does VO2max change as we age?
As we age, the function of our heart, muscles, and lungs declines, which ultimately results in a decreased VO2max. On average, there is around a 5-10% drop every ten years.
