Quick Summary

In this randomized controlled trial, daily supplementation with probiotics did not affect the risk of ear infection in children who attended day care centers.

What was studied?

Whether supplementing with Streptococcus salivarius K12 oral probiotics reduces the risk of acute otitis media (AOM) (i.e., ear infection) in children.

The primary outcome was the proportion of participants with at least 1 episode of AOM that required antimicrobial therapy. The secondary outcomes included the time to the first episode of AOM, the proportion of participants with recurrent AOM (defined as at least 3 episodes of AOM), the proportion of participants with any physician’s appointment due to acute illness, and the proportion of participants hospitalized for an acute respiratory illness.
