The participants were given either 50 milligrams (mg) of L-carnitine per kilogram of bodyweight 3 times daily (approximately 3,750 mg daily for a 25-kilogram participant) or a placebo.

The levels of alanine transaminase (ALT; the primary outcome), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), and total bilirubin decreased (improved) and were lower (better) in the L-carnitine group than in the placebo group at weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12. However, there was a higher incidence of side effects (nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting, and dizziness) in the L-carnitine group.
