    Phytosterols are plant-derived compounds that are similar to cholesterol. Phytosterols are found in foods such as vegetable oils, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, and they may be beneficial for treating high cholesterol.

    Phytosterol supplements are available as tablets or capsules. Phytosterols are also commonly taken through foods or beverages that have been fortified with phytosterols, including margarine and other spreads, salad dressings, yogurt, breads, and juice.[1]

    Most of the studies have used fortified foods, but supplements also appear to be effective.[2]

    Range of dosages studied

    Phytosterols have been given at daily doses ranging from 24 milligrams to 8.8 grams (8,800 milligrams) for durations up to 85 weeks.

    A dosage of 2 grams taken once daily is commonly recommended to achieve the maximum LDL-lowering effect.[3]
